ENSPIRE Contributor: Daniel Garritson

Luke Lawal Jr. is an entrepreneur from Washington, D.C. He is the founder and CEO of HBCU Buzz, a media outlet that delivers HBCU news, insights, and editorials from the Black College community. HBCU Buzz was created in 2011 and has since been a resource for prospective & current students and alumni. Lawal is also the founder of L & Company, an integrated marketing and consulting agency that oversees HBCU Buzz and multiple other brands aimed at the Black college student market.

Over the Juneteenth weekend, a private gathering was held both for Lawal’s birthday and also to celebrate the recent release of his book Rich Black, Poor Black (order information can be found here). The book tells the story of two young men from nearly identical backgrounds who end up in radically different lives and details the choices that led them to where they are fifteen years after losing touch. The text is a manifesto of sorts, including lessons and tools Lawal has learned in his own experience as an entrepreneur, meant to guide readers on their own journeys for greatness.

DIAGEO and its brands CÎROC, DeLeón Tequila, and Seedlip were also present at this event. This is only the latest event to see CÎROC. The brand has been consistently showing up for events such as these, hosted by or including influential figures in the Black community. In March, CÎROC and Mass Appeal held an event to celebrate 50 years of Hip-Hop. In April a celebration was held to commemorate a limited-release flavor of CÎROC, and multiple rappers and music artists were in attendance.

As recently as May, DIAGEO held a panel discussion on inclusion in the business world, hosted by Luke Lawal Jr. himself among other entrepreneurs. CÎROC has been consistent in keeping a finger on the pulse of culture, and working with ambitious figures like Luke Lawal Jr. is a surefire way to stay there.
