How has your experience working in caregiving-related jobs given you an advantage when creating your businesses and the services you provide in each one?

My experience working in caregiving-related jobs has been invaluable in shaping how I approach my businesses and the services I offer. Throughout my career, particularly in roles like Case Manager at Covenant House of Florida and Director at Mactown, I’ve developed a deep understanding of compassion, patience, and the importance of providing personalized care. These skills directly translate into my entrepreneurial endeavors, where I prioritize building meaningful relationships with my clients and customers.

For instance, in my consulting business, which focuses on helping others establish Assisted Living Facilities, Group Homes, and similar ventures, my caregiving background allows me to understand the challenges and regulatory nuances of these environments better than most. I know firsthand what it takes to deliver quality care, meet compliance standards, and ensure the well-being of residents. This inside knowledge enables me to guide my clients more effectively.

Moreover, in my beauty business, Sarah Jo’s Beauty Chateau, the caregiving mindset is reflected in our approach to helping clients feel good about themselves, not just on the outside but in overall wellness. When writing From Foster Care With A Purpose, I wanted to share a deeply personal and authentic journey with my readers, reflecting on the lessons I learned through my own experience in the foster care system and how those insights have shaped the mission of my nonprofit organization. In the book, I emphasize several key points that have been instrumental in both my personal growth and the success of From Foster Care With A Purpose:

• Resilience in the Face of Adversity: Growing up in foster care, I experienced many challenges, including dealing with the absence of my biological parents and facing emotional difficulties. In the book, I share how these experiences shaped my resilience, teaching me that circumstances do not define a person’s potential. I use this message to inspire foster children through my nonprofit, encouraging them to see beyond their current struggles and recognize their inherent worth and potential.
• The Importance of Support Systems: One of the pivotal insights from my life is the role that my foster mother, Jodye B Holmes, and other support figures played in helping me navigate trauma and find a sense of purpose. In the book, I explore the importance of caregivers, caseworkers, and mentors who go the extra mile to provide basic care and emotional and psychological support. This insight is applied directly to my nonprofit, where we work to ensure that foster children have access to strong support systems that uplift and empower them.

Any advice on the challenges and successes you’ve experienced that aspiring entrepreneurs should learn from to thrive?

My journey from foster care to entrepreneurship has taught me many valuable lessons, which I now apply to my businesses and share with aspiring entrepreneurs. One of the most important advice I can give is to embrace resilience. The challenges I faced as a foster child and in supporting a mentally ill mother taught me that adversity often catalyzes growth. Entrepreneurs must understand that obstacles are inevitable. Still, they can also shape you into a stronger and more capable leader.

Another key to success is to seek out strong support systems. My foster mother provided me with the stability and guidance I needed to overcome hardships, and I applied this same principle in business. Surround yourself with mentors, partners, and colleagues who believe in your vision and push you to succeed. Also, remember to give back. Leading with a heart for helping others can be a powerful driver for long-term success.
