In these colder months, many women with natural hair struggle to maintain moisture and prevent damage. Could you share some tips and tricks for a healthy winter hair care routine for natural hair while keeping styles versatile and on-trend?

You wouldn’t believe the number of people I speak to about this topic. For the colder months especially, I firmly believe that healthy moisturized hair starts at the shampoo bowl. Cleansing your hair strands with a moisturizing cleanser will provide that fresh start we all need. We’d follow that with a hydrating shampoo; the final step would be moisturizing shampoo. Once you’ve finished shampooing, moisturize your hair based on your chosen style. I always recommend conditioner with a thicker consistency for curly styles, followed by a light leave-in after rinsing.

For straight styles, I always recommend a conditioner with a light* consistency followed by a light leave before blow drying. Using a heat protectant throughout the thermal straightening process is key. This allows the hair to lock in its moisture without reverting as fast. Protecting the hair with satin-lined hats can also help during the winter months. Not only are you combating the cold, but you’re also combating the snags and unintentional breakage.

How does this differ from caring for extensions during the colder months?

Caring for natural hair versus caring for extensions is like night and day. Extensions alone don’t require most of the steps needed to protect the natural hair. Extensions are usually sealed with a silicone protectant. This protectant can create a significant barrier in terms of breakage, while natural hair needs consistent hydration to moisturize the hair strands properly.

Wigs have become increasingly popular amongst celebrities and everyday women alike. What are some of the driving forces behind this trend? Could you walk us through some techniques you use to create undetectable wigs that seamlessly blend with natural hair?

Wigs have become a more on-trend form of protecting the hair. One of the driving forces is accessibility. Access to hair extension vendors is not how they were before! With the internet, people can now research and even plug in a desired style, texture, and curl anytime. Some techniques that I like to incorporate involve great detail. Weighing the extensions before wig creation is a significant way that I can keep the density low for clients. Ventilation in key areas along the hairline and parting space provides a unique look. Density is genuinely the most essential factor when it comes to creating that SewNatural staple.

For women who want to embrace the versatility of wigs and extensions while protecting their natural hair health, what are some go-to protective styles you recommend for the fall and winter seasons? How can women ensure their natural hair stays healthy underneath these styles?

During the colder months, I suggest transitioning to closures behind the hairline. They can provide a significant amount of coverage while maintaining the hair’s integrity. Oftentimes, when more lace is involved, it’s harder to focus on the overall health of the natural hairline. Having a much-needed break from covering the hair’s perimeter can help with overall hair growth. Individual braiding techniques, faux locs, and cornrows are always great go-to styles. Not only are they economical, but they can last for a significant amount of time.

The hair care and wig industry, particularly amongst Black women, is a multi-billion dollar. What factors do you attribute to this significant financial impact? Where do you see this industry going in the future?

The hair care and wig industry has genuinely taken off for the better because of the amount of education that black women are privy to. We have a variety of sources and experts that are easily accessible. With the click of a button, we can automatically see the difference in detail and quality regarding wigs. There’s also such a vast amount of hair care products that cater to each. This alone drives the direct sales and revenue for the product owners. I see the hair industry continuing to grow. There will definitely be a clear distinction between what is easily accessible versus what is extremely inaccessible. This has a lot to do with cost and availability.

You’ve mentioned your passion for empowering women to feel confident through their hair. Could you elaborate on this concept and share some advice for our readers on achieving hair confidence, whether rocking their natural curls, trying a new look with a wig, or anything in between?

When discussing passion and empowering women to feel confident, it always starts with the person feeling comfortable about being with a stylist who cares. Once a person can find the salon home that makes them feel like they are important and valued, that’s where the magic and connection truly happen.

As a licensed Natural Hair Care professional and Cosmetologist, I always try to express that my clients can easily go between their natural hair and extensions. Again, much of this starts with the shampoo and the entire education process throughout the appointment and after. I always allow my clients to express their feelings and what they want to improve with their hair knowledge. Being able to provide information that I have used as well helps tremendously.
