“Love Uptempo Vol. 1” is a vibrant, fresh take on the nostalgic groove of R&B. What inspired you to specifically focus on this high-energy, feel-good R&B vibe for this project, and how do you feel it reflects your evolution as an artist?”
I felt like there wasn’t enough high-vibrational R&B in the marketplace. I always want to be intentional about the energy in the message I deliver in my music. Doing a project consisting of only mid- to up-tempos was challenging, but I’m glad that I accomplished the goal and could release it.
What are the biggest challenges and rewards you’ve experienced in building Art Society Music Group, and what advice would you give to other R&B artists looking to establish their independent path?
My challenge with jumpstarting my label was finances. You don’t realize how much money goes into a project to ensure it’s visible to the people who need to hear it. The greatest reward is when your investments supersede your expectations, and you can scale. My best advice to any indie R&B artist is to start now with what you have and build as you go along.
How does writing for other artists inform your creative process, and what unique perspectives do you bring to your solo work after experiencing the industry from that angle?
Being an artist and a songwriter forces you to create your narrative. I target the blue-collar lover, the 9-to-5 worker who is overlooked and underserved in music. My perspective is always geared towards them, making my sound and approach unique.
The lead single, “Love In The Middle,” generates significant buzz with audiences. What specific effects of this track resonate with listeners, and what can fans expect from the overall sonic and thematic journey of “Love Uptempo Vol. 1?”
Love In The Middle is just a great-feeling record. I then believe it will resonate even more with people because it’s sonically geared towards spring and summertime. As far as Love Uptempo Vol. 1, people can expect high-vibrational R&B, haha.
Looking back on your career, which has seen multiple Billboard #1s and consistent success, what are you most proud of achieving, and what are your aspirations for the future of your music and ASMG?
I’m most proud of making a career out of my passion. Eleven years and counting of music have paid all of my bills. I aspire to be a trailblazer for Indie R&B. I want to break as many glass ceilings as I can to make sure the next generation can fly higher.
