James K. Joseph, Corporate Chief of Staff of the Tidal Basin Group, has been appointed to the advisory board of the Institute for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Management (I-DIEM). The I-DIEM is a 501(c)3 global non-profit organization that seeks to integrate equity into emergency management. Their vision is to support the empowerment of marginalized communities within all phases of the emergency management cycle.

Joseph said, “I firmly believe in I-DIEM’s mission and look forward to doing my part to promote the integration of social equity and the need for more women and minorities not only in our field of emergency management but in leadership positions as well.”

Joseph is a well-established champion of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), spearheaded initiatives during his time serving in the Federal government. He has also spoken at regional and national conferences on the topic. In 2021, he testified before Congress on DEI. Joseph has upwards of 15 years of experience in senior leadership in both the public and private sector, including serving as the FEMA Region V Administrator and Director of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA).

He is currently the Corporate Chief of Staff for Tidal Basin Group, the nation’s leading emergency and disaster management consulting firm. Tidal Basin provides programmatic and technical management experience and resources to governments, organizations, businesses, and communities. Before being promoted to chief of staff, Joseph was the Vice President of Response for the Tidal Basin, where he oversaw growth strategies, operational deployments of personnel, and projects for response programs. Besides this, he has represented the organization at national events.

“We are truly excited to have James join our Advisory Board as I-DIEM continues to advance the push for equity within the emergency management enterprise. He brings a unique perspective and tenured experience in emergency management, and we are honored by his commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion,” said I-DIEM Chief Executive Officer Chauncia Willis. Joseph’s extensive experience promoting DEI within the emergency response sector will be an asset to the organization going forward, as it continues to advocate for marginalized groups.

Emergency management is crucial to protecting citizens across the nation and in order to effectively serve all members of our community. It’s important to have equity in mind when we design strategies to keep our communities safe. Without attention to DEI, it becomes too easy for these programs to ignore marginalized groups and leave certain members of the community without relief. As an experienced DEI advocate, Joseph will make an incredible addition to the I-DIEM team, helping to move the organization forward in its goals to facilitate change in the disaster management cycle with a focus on humanity.
