( ENSPIRE Community Spotlight ) UNCF “A Mind Is…” Hamptons Summer Benefit Raises over $200K The United Negro College Fund New York’s annual summer benefit in the Hamptons is a great experience for those looking to give back and have an impact on the lives of our youth. This amazing fundraising event was produced by Dee Rivera, Founder of Dee+Co Group. UNCF raised over $200k that will continue to assist our youth in educational advancements and opportunities. Former President of Spelman and Bennett College, Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole and Co-Founder of Essence, Edward Lewis were honored for being trailblazers of education and voices of the unheard. Master of Ceremonies for the weekend was Don Lemon and Dr. Michael L. Lomax, UNCF’s president, and CEO who made sure everyone was enjoying themselves, but not forgetting to open those wallets. Don set the mark donating $1000 and asking others to follow suit, which they did! An unforgettable moment was to see a recipient of a UNCF scholarship tell her story of resilience, obstacles, successes and then to be embraced by Dr. Cole. That moment represents why we support, why we bring attention to causes like this. When you are able to see the end result and you are literally speechless with positive emotions, it does something to you. It makes you want to think about what more you can do and that is very important in our country at this time. We all need to re-evaluate and think what it is that we can do to make available opportunities for our youth. Thank you to UNCF co-chairs, Jean Shafiroff and Gregory Lowe II, whose leadership led to this exciting and successful weekend. Close to 200 guests attended the celebratory weekend, including Love & Hip Hop’s Yandy Smith Harris, Author/Motivational Speaker Jamila T. Davis, celebrity stylist Ty Hunter, actor Sarunas Jackson of the HBO hit series “Insecure,” and others. Many participants left feeling inspired and ready to champion for education and the important work UNCF does to help deserving students get to and through college.
