This fall, some of the strongest female warriors to ever live will conquer the big screen. Based on true events, The Woman King depicts the Agojie, an all-female military group that served the Kingdom of Dahomey for nearly 3 centuries.
Viola Davis will star as General Nanisca who directs and trains the next generation of Agojie. Alongside Davis, Thuso Mbedu stars as Nawi, the Agojie’s newest and most ambitious recruit. Together, this group of fierce fighters comes together to take on an enemy who seeks to destroy their way of life. Other starring cast members include Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and John Boyega.
This incredible film all started at the 2015 Women Making History Award Show. After presenting Viola Davis with her award, Maria Bello pitched her movie concept to the audience. Immediately, the audience showed excitement at the idea of Davis taking on such a powerful role.
With the help of Dana Stevens, Maria Bello created the story of The Woman King. Soon after, Gina Prince-Bythewood eagerly took on the role of director for this sure-to-be memorable film. American trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard crafted the new film’s musical score with the help of South African composer Lebo M., who composed and produced 5 original songs for the film. And the rest is history!
The star-studded reign of The Woman King will begin on September 16. Be sure to watch it exclusively in theaters near you!
