Christopher Martin is set to star alongside B. Simone, Kim Coles, Angela Gibbs, and other talented names on Bounce’s first season of “Finding Happy,” which premiered last Saturday. The series tells the story of Yaz Carter as she sifts through the mess that is her love life, career, and family in search of happiness. Martin will play the role of “DJ Gravy” throughout the season, and he’s using his DJing background to bring the character vividly to life.
Within the plot of the show, Yaz is trying to work her way up at her company, “D-1 Media.” To do that, she attempts to join “The Brunch Crew,” D-1 Media’s newest and hottest show. DJ Gravy is already part of The Brunch Crew, and Yaz can’t wait to join him.
But Martin isn’t just playing a DJ – he used to be one himself! In fact, Martin got his start in the entertainment industry in broadcast journalism, working as a sports anchor for K6KZ-TV6. Since then, he’s been a DJ and on-air personality for many networks and shows across television and radio, including the Urban Television Network, Magic 108FM, and Sports Network Inc. In Atlanta, Martin has garnered a reputation for himself DJing for “silent headphone parties.” At these parties, every guest wears a different set of headphones via which they can select what kind of music they want to listen to. Martins’ music, therefore, has the unique ability to get everyone dancing to different beats.“I used to be a DJ back in the day, I used to be in broadcast journalism,” Martin said. “So when I saw I was going to be DJ Gravy I was like ‘Yeah, let me get that!’ Martin recalled the vocalization and demeanor of his DJing personality to more vividly craft the voice of DJ Gravy.
“I’ve been blessed with this voice, you know what I mean, so I could inflect here, put this little baritone on there,” he said. “That energy, that was genuine. And it was very believable. I had that experience, which was good to help me with the character.”
This is the latest in many roles Martin has acquired lately, including parts on TV One’s “Fatal Attraction” and BET’s “The Sound of Christmas.” According to a press release, Martin “has several projects for film and TV in development and will host events throughout 2022.” But his role as DJ Gravy in particular gives him the opportunity to get in touch with his past through the character.“I feel very excited, I feel lucky, I feel blessed to be doing what I love and having directors, producers recognize me and be giving me opportunities,” Martin said.
